Background

Dr. Gabby Resch is an Assistant Professor whose research explores new methods for making sense of data as it moves between physical and digital worlds. Prior to joining Ontario Tech, he was a postdoctoral fellow with the Synaesthetic Media Lab at Ryerson University, where he carried out research on virtual reality games designed to enhance spatial cognition, augmented and virtual reality environments for motor learning, and immersive media for medical training. The latter work, an ongoing collaboration with researchers at Ryerson, Georgia Tech, University of Toronto, and Toronto General Hospital, was recently supported with a SSHRC Insight grant.

Dr. Resch received his PhD and Master's degrees in Information Science from the University of Toronto, where his doctoral research examined tangible and embodied approaches to data visualization. Over the years, he developed and taught a number of innovative visualization and interaction design courses at U of T. He also carried out numerous collaborations with institutional partners including Autodesk Research, the Ontario Science Centre, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Art Gallery of Ontario. His current research focuses on tangible, AR, and VR contexts for data visualization, critical and human-centred approaches to data literacy, and immersive 3D media for spatial cognition and medical training.
